Kerri Woods, Superintendent

The 2008-2009 Sunday School year continued in January 2009.  Classes offered included a Pre-School class (Teacher: Nichole Newman), Elementary class (Teachers:  Carolyn Todd and Heather Jaquay), a Middle School class (Teachers: David Rebuck and Kerri Woods), a High School class (Teachers: Rob Schutt and Joanne Broekhuizen), and an Adult class.

The Sunday School year ended on Youth Sunday, May 3, 2009.  The service, led by the youth and children, was a tribute to Pastor Joe Glaze.  Each young person wrote his or her own words about Joe and read them to him.  These tributes were collected in a scrapbook prepared by Laurie Haswell, and the scrapbook was presented to Joe on his last Sunday with First Baptist.  The Youth Sunday Service also served as the annual recognition service for students and teachers.  Graduating senior Josh Haswell was recognized.  In lieu of a gift, Josh requested that a donation be made to a charity of his choice.  A Bible was presented to 3rd grader, Ada Hayduke-Toomath.

Vacation Bible School was directed by Park United Methodist Church in August 2009.  VBS planning will be under the direction of First Baptist Church in 2010.

Sunday School resumed in September 2009, with four classes being offered.  The Preschool/Early Elementary (Teacher: Nichole Newman) and Upper Elementary (Teachers: Carolyn Todd and Heather Jaquay) classes studied from the David C. Cook American Baptist Curriculum.  The 8th-12th Grade Class (Teachers: Joanne Broekhuizen and David Rebuck) studied curriculum of their choosing.  The adult class, a discussion-based class, also chose their own study materials.

On December 13, 2009, the children and youth presented the program, "The Twelve Days of Christmas."  The program described the Christian meaning behind the traditional Christmas song.  The young people once again did a fabulous job.

Patty Eldaco continued as our nursery care provider.  The kids think she is great and are very comfortable under her care.

Junior Church has not occurred since September 2009.  Following the Children's Sermon, the youngest Sunday School students have been going to the nursery, and the older students have remained in the sanctuary for the service.

I want to give a big thank you to the Christian Education Committee members: Joanne Broekhuizen, Laurie Haswell, Nichole Newman, and Barb Rebuck.  I would also like to thank Heather Jaquay and Carolyn Todd, who are not committee members, but who are always willing to lend a helping hand in all of the youth programs.

Respectfully submitted,
Kerri Woods
